Reclaiming Our Identities as Women

I have always struggled with being comfortable in my own skin. For as long as I can remember, I knew that I wasn’t what guys found pretty, that I was just the funny friend. It didn’t help that everyone around me looked like each other, Hispanic, short, and pretty. And it hurt. A lot. It wasn’t until I started college that I realized that there are so any different kinds of people. Different people with different experiences and people that look different from each other. And I felt accepted. That’s what this art piece represents, the body types and different colors inside. The different colors represent the different personalities within each woman. Despite each figure being in the same position, you can very clearly see the differences between each woman, each and every curve is different. To me, reclaiming our identities is accepting and embracing our bodies and who we are in general. Allowing ourselves to laugh loudly, tell dumb jokes, or just being okay with not saying anything, but by choice not because we are silenced. Our identity isn’t just tied to our appearances but that doesn’t mean that we stop caring about it. It just means that we accept each other tal como somos porque somos mujeres que son mucho más que esposas y madres. Somos artistas, escritoras, científica, y mucho más.
