“My Body, My Choice”: Pro Choice Advocacy

Abortion is a sensitive topic for many people due to their beliefs or personal experiences, which is why Pro-choice is essential to many women because they get to decide what they want to do with their bodies without the government’s interference. Women have fought for their rights for many decades, and this includes the right to a legal, safe abortion. Many women have protested and brought awareness to the pro-choice movement.

When abortion is illegal in a woman’s country or state, it causes bad health conditions. Women seek other places, which can be unsafe and risk their health and lives. Health and safety are a massive part of why abortion should be legal. Women should be able to have legal access to abortion clinics rather than resorting to abortion or seeking unsafe access. Unsafe access can lead to trauma, infection, infertility, or even death.

In 1973, Roe v. Wade was a Supreme Court decision to legalize women’s rights to abortion. It legalized it for the women’s first two trimesters in their pregnancy. The Supreme Court decided that women have the right to privacy in their body choices. They believed that legalizing abortion would help women with any health issues. This was a huge accomplishment for women.

Unfortunately, in 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned, and women lost their rights when it came to abortion. Many women in the U.S. believe their rights have been taken away due to the rollback. Some women don’t want the baby, have high-risk pregnancies, or are affected mentally and emotionally by being forced to continue. When a woman is pregnant, her body and hormones change, and she goes through many emotions. Forced pregnancies can often lead to depression, anxiety, and trauma—especially in cases of rape. Women should not be put in a position where they go through such huge measures. It’s not fair to decide for someone else. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but no one should have control over someone else’s body. Every individual circumstance is different, which is why pro-choice is essential.

We can still bring awareness to pro-choice and the message “My Body, My Choice.” Starting conversations with friends and family, and sharing stories of women who have dealt with unsafe abortions or trauma, can help others understand. Social media is a strong way to help raise awareness. Hashtags like #ProChoice and #MyBodyMyChoice can help you speak your voice.

Another way to show support is through clothing, pins, and stickers that promote pro-choice. When talking about these issues, it’s essential to stay educated. Men can also be great allies and speak up for women’s rights. Judges and lawmakers should learn how illegal abortion affects women’s lives because once they understand the effects that can come upon women, it will help them come to a better decision on women’s rights.

Pro-choice isn’t about promoting an abortion. It’s not promoting that every pregnant woman should have an abortion. Pro-choice is about women being able to decide what they can do with their bodies. Not someone else’s body, but their bodies because they know how they feel, know their body best, and get to decide in any circumstance they face.
